What progressive lens do you usually dispense?
Varilux, Shamir, and some private labels.

What A/R Coating do you prefer?
Crizal Alize

Do you tend to dispense more Silicone or non-Silicone Contact Lenses?
We don't automatically turn to silicone hydrogel for every new fit contact lens. We evaluate what they are wearing, the modality that is best for the patient, and compliance factors. We fit about 30% silicon hydrogel lenses.

What are your thoughts on Ophthalmologists opening more dispensaries in the future?
I think that some Ophthalmologists may be turning to dispensaries as a way of supplementing their income, but those that value the referrals of opticians and optometrists realize that retail is not for them. Most people realize that eyewear is more than an appliance, or a sight aid, and is in fact part of their wardrobes. Many consumers would no sooner buy their glasses from an eye surgeon, than they would a pair of shoes from a podiatrist. They just don't associate a doctor's office with fashion.

What do you think the future holds for Independent dispensaries?
I think that in spite of all the doom and gloom about the future of independents, there is a bright future of them. As the mega optical retailers get larger, they become cumbersome, and can't readily react to market turns. They are manufacturing and buying their products in such bulk, that when economies turn, or fashions change, they cannot maneuver with the swiftness that is often required in today's business environment.

Independents have the opportunity to keep a pulse on the market at ground level. That is, they have closer contact with their customers, they know what styles they are looking for, and they have a better understanding of what the local market will bear.

When a customer gets their Rx filled at an independent optical, there is a good chance that the person that takes the frame measurements is also the person that does the ordering, the accounting, the dispensing, and any number of other duties that enable them to keep tabs on the entire process. This can only be good for the consumer in terms of quality, and accountability of the business.
