Michael Ness

Hoya Vision Care, North America, has named veteran optical executive Michael Ness president of Hoya Lens of America, which is the division of Hoya Vision Care dedicated to serving the independent and commercial distribution channel. Barney Dougher will retain his role as president and CEO of Hoya Vision Care, North America. Ness began his career in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, and has held senior management positions at several optical manufacturing companies.

Cartier North America


Emmanuel Perrin

Emmanuel Perrin assumed the role of president and CEO of Cartier North America, effective Jan. 1, 2010. Previously, Perrin was president and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels, Inc., based in the U.S., and prior to that, he was CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels in Japan. Perrin succeeded Frédéric de Narp, who resigned to pursue other opportunities, according to Cartier. Currently, the eyewear sector is run by Martin Gatins, senior vice president of Cartier’s wholesale division, who will now report to Perrin. 

REM Eyewear


Karyn Alevy

REM Eyewear has appointed Karyn Alevy as Sunwear Director for REM Eyewear, and REM’s luxury division, Basecurve. Servicing the crucial New York market, Karyn will lead the growth of REM’s Retail Sunglass and Ready Reader business within the luxury and mid-tier department store channels. A Cornell University graduate, Alevy spent 10 years building her career at Saks 5th Avenue, climbing the ladder to become the Buyer of Men’s Modern Clothing.

REM Eyewear has also named Jordan Goodman as the Brand Manager for Converse Eyewear. He will play a critical role in a partnership between Converse and REM Eyewear that has lasted more than twenty years, and will spearhead the development and marketing of this perpetually growing brand presence. Previous to REM, Goodman was the president at Clear World Productions Inc, a full service entertainment marketing company out of Toronto, Canada.

Irwin Nathanson

Davis Vision has named Irwin Nathanson, OD, a general and pediatric optometrist from Danvers, Mass., as its 2010 Provider of the Year. Nathanson is the top-ranked provider in Davis Vision's national network of nearly 30,000 providers. His award is based on dedication to high standards, and the exceptional quality of care he provides to his patients, as measured by the results of patient satisfaction surveys and site visits conducted by Davis Vision's Quality Assurance program. Nathanson has been practicing for over 35 years and is a member of the New York Children's Vision Coalition.

Optometry Giving Sight


Michael Goldsmid

San Diego Optometrist Dr. Michael Goldsmid has been named Vision Source Philanthropist of the Year by Optometry Giving Sight, an organization established to address the needs of the 670 million men, women and children around the world who are blind or vision impaired simply because they don’t have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Dr. Goldsmid is a graduate of the University of Houston School of Optometry and also received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston.

Bernard Haffey

ForSight VISION3, Inc. has announced the appointment of Bernard Haffey as president and CEO. Haffey, a veteran executive in ophthalmology, has held executive roles at several innovative medical technology companies. A graduate of Colgate University, he also holds an MBA from Cornell University, The Johnson Graduate School of Management. Most recently, Haffey led NDO Surgical, Inc., guiding the sale of the company to a strategic partner in 2008. 

Lab Veteran Jack Benjamin passes away…

Jack Benjamin, co-founder of Laramy-K Optical laboratory, passed away at his home in Indianola, Iowa on March 30 after a battle with lung cancer. He was 72 years old. 

Benjamin, also known as JB, started his optical career in the Navy. Following his graduation from the Naval Academy in 1957, he worked at Chesapeake Optical in Baltimore, Md. and at Lens Tech in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., one of the first labs in the country to successfully process plastic lenses. Benjamin later moved to Beaverton, Ore., where he was co-owner of Pioneer Optics. He later worked at Ultra Optics in Fort Lauderdale, Midwest Uncuts in Indianola, Iowa before founding Laramy-K Optical in Indianola with his wife, of almost 36 years, Janet. In addition to Janet, Benjamin is survived by his son Keith and daughters Amy and Lara.
